Milwaukee publisher George Brumder commissioned the mansion for his son in 1910. Architect Herman Schnetzky fused arts and crafts, Gothic, and Victorian styles in a three-story house with a basement ballroom and street entrance. After Mrs. Brumder died the family sold it. Night-club owner Sam Pick bought it in 1927 and ran a speakeasy. He left a few years later. Lawyers, then Allis-Chalmers workers, lived there. A Lutheran church held the property from the mid-1940s. Restorers reopened it as a bed-and-breakfast in 1997, and new owners arrived in 2008. Today the Brumder Mansion is still open for overnight stays and additionally hosts comedy shows in the underground theater.
At least three spirits roam the mansion. The Gold Suite hosts a strict woman who hates dogs. She once shouted at a guest. On another occasion fresh blood appeared in the tub basin when no visitor was occupying the room. A playful child drifts mainly near Marion’s Suite. Investigators recorded a tiny voice pleading, “Don’t leave, help me.” Beds bounce and Emma’s framed marriage certificate shattered after falling alone. Guests have been locked out while the doorbell rang the wrong tune. The activity feels curious, not cruel.
