Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub History
Kells Irish Restaurant & Bar, which was established in 1983 by the McAleese family, is situated within the Butterworth building, a historic edifice dating back several centuries. Notably, this building, which formerly served as a mortuary, features an entrance that was utilized for admitting deceased individuals. Remarkably, it was the initial establishment in the city to provide facilities specifically catering to matters involving mortality.
Ghost Story
The pub has more than just regulars who enjoy a pint. One of its most famous patrons is Charlie, a friendly ghost who seems to love live music as much as anyone. Often spotted near the Guinness mirror, Charlie appears, tips his derby hat, and vanishes into thin air. He’s most active when the bands play, and while his presence might raise the hairs on your neck, he’s known for enjoying the pub’s positive vibes, keeping things spooky but playful.
