Chester Thorne, a founder of the Port of Tacoma, built Thornewood Castle. Construction took nearly four years, and the 27,000-square-foot manor was completed in 1911. Thorne used 400-year-old bricks from an English castle to create the grand estate. Today, it is a country inn with modern amenities offering over 11 rooms and suites. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The castle was later chosen as the filming location for Stephen King’s mini-series ‘Rose Red’ and ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’.
Thornewood Castle has a history of reported hauntings. Chester Thorne’s ghost has been seen in his former room, where light bulbs are often found unscrewed. His wife, Anna, has been spotted sitting by the window in what is now the bridal suite. Guests claim to see her reflection in an original mirror. A child has also been seen standing alone by the lake. This may be the spirit of a former owner’s grandchild who drowned there.
