The Gadsby’s Tavern Museum was opened up in Alexandria in 1785. In 1792, a larger Federal hotel was built nearby. John Gadsby took charge in and ran both until 1808. The tavern hosted key figures, including six early presidents who dined there and the Marquis de Lafayette. George Washington attended Birthnight Balls at the City Hotel. Today the site serves as a museum that preserves its 18th-century legacy. It stands as a National Historic Landmark for its role in early American society.
There was a mysterious lady that once stayed in Room 8 of Gadsby’s Tavern. She unfortunately died there. Since then, there has been several cases of paranormal activity. Visitors often see her in the windows holding a candle. Reports have mentioned a sick looking lady in the ballroom during parties. Those who try to speak with her find she vanishes instantly. Occasionally people hear soft crying from Room 8, and guests notice candles moved without explanation. The mysterious woman has also been seen beside her grave in the town cemetery. Her mysterious presence remains one of Alexandria’s best-known ghost stories.
