Before the Civil War the Marshall to Shreveport stage road ruled travel. It ran northeast from Marshall, shadowing today’s State Highway 43, joined the Jefferson route, then angled toward Waskom. By 1850 three coaches came and went each week, the driver’s bugle drawing crowds. Iron wheels ground the dirt up to twelve feet deep. Rain often turned the pathway to mud. Plantation owner William Bradfield and his son kept the line rolling through wartime shortages. Traffic collapsed once the Southern Pacific rail reached Shreveport. Today many still drive the Old Stagecoach Road by car.
A distraught mother who drowned her children prowls for revenge, blaming the town that killed her. Some nights a Voodoo queen, chased from New Orleans and slain by a Marshall priest, steps from the brush beneath a full moon, clutching ritual items close. Some cars often find child-size handprints spread across the glass. Drivers swear the prints appear while the car is still moving. Drivers have heard the unsettling sound of a heavy body crashing onto their vehicle roofs, believed to be echos from a past tree hanging.
