Opened in 1896, Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, Tennessee, was built following the violent Coal Creek War, a labor conflict that led the state to use prisoners in coal mines across 9,000 acres of land. Originally built for around 600 inmates, the prison’s population grew to over 970 by the Great Depression, forcing expansion. The mining ended in the late 1960s, but Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary continued to house high-security convicts, including James Earl Ray, until its closure in 2009.
Paranormal investigators and visitors have witnessed activity including weird sounds, disembodied footsteps, and ghostly cries. Apparitions appear as both solid figures and dark swirling masses, with some even caught on video. The notorious “creeper” spirit is said to crawl across the auditorium floor. This is believed to be an inmate who died after a violent altercation and abandonment in solitary confinement. Tour guides report frequent ghost sightings.
