White Oak Flats Cemetery was established in 1830, though some graves date back to the 1700s. It became the final resting place for early settlers, including the Ogle family, one of the first to settle in the area. Civil War soldiers and enslaved individuals are also buried here, with many graves marked only by field stones. In 2016, wildfires devastated Gatlinburg, destroying large areas of land and property. Yet, despite the destruction, the cemetery remained untouched. Many consider its survival a miracle.
A Lady in Black, believed to be a spirit tied to the land, has been seen wandering the graves. Some say she scratches disrespectful visitors. There are also reports of a Mountain Witch roaming the area. These two spirits could possibly be linked. Many visitors claim to have captured orbs in photographs, both during the day and night. Some believe these glowing spheres are spirits of people buried here.
