Eastern State Penitentiary History
Originally called Cherry Hill State Prison, Eastern State Penitentiary was built on ten acres of farmland just outside of Philadelphia. Construction kicked off in 1822, and by 1829, this groundbreaking facility opened its doors, staying operational until 1971. What set it apart? It was the first to experiment with solitary confinement—a method that shaped prison systems worldwide. But the prison also saw its share of darkness. Over the years, violence escalated, with numerous guards and inmates meeting tragic ends.
Paranormal Activity
In the 1990s, Gary Johnson, a locksmith working at the prison, had an unforgettable and eerie experience while trying to remove a rusted lock from Cellblock 4. As he worked, a sudden and intense force gripped him, leaving him frozen in place. A blast of freezing air shot out from the cell, bringing with it an overwhelming feeling of despair. Faces—haunting and terrifying—appeared on the walls. One ghostly figure seemed to reach out, almost beckoning him into the darkness.
