The Welty House played a pivotal role during the Battle of Gettysburg. Confederate forces used it as a sharpshooter position, and it still bears visible scars from the fighting. The basement provided shelter for the Welty Family and their neighbors, the Rupps, during the chaos. After the battle, the property became a temporary burial site for 36 Union and Confederate soldiers. By 2006, the Welty House was converted into an inn, becoming part of the Brickhouse Inn.

The Welty House is known for its intense paranormal activity. Visitors report hearing the voices and movements of Confederate and Union soldiers throughout the house. Shadow figures, believed to be soldiers, are often seen along walls and staircases. The ghost of Charlie Toot, a former owner often seen in the Ohio Room, is said to move furniture and give orders. Two spirits of the Welty family’s children, who died before the Civil War, are also believed to linger in the home.
