The Damascus Pioneer Cemetery dates back to before 1855, though the exact start of burials remains unknown. It officially received its designation as cemetery land in 1876, and by 1895, the Damascus Cemetery Association was formed to oversee its upkeep. Today burials are still permitted with some graves reaching over a century old.
A tale circulates of a young girl, likely between seven and ten years old, seen near a particular grave, where she appears to stand and linger. Reports include sounds of footsteps and unusual noises, especially from the cemetery’s far left corner. One visitor noted an unsettling sensation of being watched and followed, particularly in the oldest section of the grounds. Others have claimed to see a woman in a white dress beneath the tunnel of trees.
