Ohio State Reformatory History
After a decade of construction, the Ohio State Reformatory opened its doors to inmates in 1896. Designed by Cleveland architect Levi Scofield, this imposing limestone structure was built with a unique purpose: to inspire, uplift, and intimidate all at once. Originally called the “Intermediate Penitentiary,” it housed offenders who were too old for juvenile detention but not serious enough for the Ohio State Penitentiary. And if you’re a fan of The Shawshank Redemption, this is the iconic prison where the legendary movie was filmed.
Paranormal Activity
Deep in the basement, two very different spirits linger. One sorrowful, the other sinister. The tragic tale of a 14-year-old boy who lost his life there is tied to creepy sightings. His shadowy figure is sometimes seen darting along the walls or slipping out of sight from the corner of your eye. His presence feels oddly peaceful, but things take a darker turn when the guard appears. Many believe this malevolent spirit could be tied to the boy’s untimely death, casting a much more unsettling atmosphere when he’s near.
