In the 1960s soldier Jim Landoll vows to build an American castle after seeing Europe. In the early 1970s he and Marta launch Landoll Publishing from almost nothing. The firm becomes the nation’s second-largest children’s book publisher and sells in 1997. Jim pours the gains into a hilltop fortress built without blueprints, using on-site timber and fieldstone. Landoll’s Mohican Castle opened the doors to the public in 2002. Marta refines operations after Jim retires in 2007. Their son Jimmy took over in 2013. Today the Landoll’s Mohican Castle remains a hotel which also offers paranormal investigations and ghost tours.
Paranormal investigators have found good evidence at MacBeth Cottage which is located on the property. Recorders capture muffled voices, measured footsteps, and heavy bumps after dark. A few guests even claim they saw the cottage’s former owner standing in the hallway. Another hot spot is Heyd Cemetery. A young girl in a blue dress drifts between the stones and also hangs at the pool where a church once stood. Potentially the same child spirit greeted researchers at the nearby Heyde Cabin with a clear “Hello” and tried to slip her small hand into theirs.
