The Old Merchant’s House was built by Joseph Brewster who was a hat maker. The property was then owned by Seabury Tredwell and his wife. They enlarged certain rooms to accommodate eight children. One daughter named Gertrude remained in the house her entire life. A grand-nephew rescued the property from auction after she died. He transformed it into a museum displaying original furnishings. Over time trustees repaired water damage and preserved its 19th-century style. It remains an enduring example of lavish Greek Revival design and is open today to the public as a museum.
Visitors often report strange sounds or scents, especially tobacco in Seabury’s old room. Many have seen a woman in a brown dress who may be one of the six Tredwell daughters. A black-gowned figure has also appeared in hallways. People sense cold spots and feel unseen eyes on them. Some claim to hear piano notes in the front parlor. Even staff members, who are often skeptical, admit something odd happens here. Gertrude’s presence is felt most strongly and is said to watch over the building.
