The 1890 House Museum has a castle appearance made of limestone and built by Chester F. Wickwire. Chester and Theodore Wickwire started on a farm, then moved to Cortland for better opportunities. They opened a hardware store and invented a loom that wove wire into useful items. Patents and hard work fueled their success. They hired immigrants for the busy factory. Chester married Ardell, and they raised three sons, though one died young. With growing wealth, the family built a grand home around 1890. After Chester died in 1910 and Ardell followed, relatives eventually preserved the property as a museum.
People claim the spirit of Margaret Stack roams the halls and moves objects in her old room. Investigators have recorded her voice. Chester’s ghost is said to push his chair away after mealtime and enjoy the billiards area. Frederic’s presence is intense. Workers sense him watching their every move. A playful child spirit, that could be Raymond, entertains himself on the third floor. Screams are still heard from an attack that took place in the house and a darker entity lingers in the cupola. Visitors report chills and disembodied voices.
