Originally the Charles Hotel, this burnt down in 1894, leading Albert Augustus Thayer to rebuild it as the Thayer Hotel. It featured 22 small rooms over three floors and was the first Annandale building to have gas lighting and electricity. During its earlier time Al Capone famously rented the entire third floor. After passenger train service ended, the hotel deteriorated badly. Locals fought off demolition attempts, renovating it into a bed and breakfast. Later, psychic Sharon Gammel bought it, hosting paranormal and murder-mystery events. When she died, the building remained closed, sustaining extensive water damage. In 2021, Chef Bob Krebsbach purchased and restored the property. He reopened the restaurant and bar, eventually welcoming hotel guests again in 2023.
Guests often experience flickering lights, footsteps, and disembodied voices. Original owners “Gus” and Caroline Thayer appear frequently, leaving pennies as friendly greetings. A handyman’s ghost walks the halls inspecting repairs. The scent of fish signals a sea captain’s presence, who responds to visitors’ questions. Three spirits of former prostitutes roam freely, entertaining themselves by hiding keys and makeup items. Three ghost cats, including former owner Sharon’s pet, Cocoa, wander hallways and guest rooms unaware they’re spirits.
