Granary Burying Ground History
Granary Burying Ground holds the distinction of being the city’s oldest cemetery, which was established in 1660. Considered a part of Boston Common, this burial ground was initially known as South Burial Ground before expanding its borders in 1717 to absorb a portion of the neighboring road. Its name transitioned to Granary Burying Ground in 1737 after a grain storage building located nearby. John Hancock and Samuel Adams are buried here and the cemetery accommodates around 1 million visitors per year.
Paranormal Activity
Visitors of the Granary Burying Ground have witnessed figures, orbs, mysterious lights and shadowy specters. Paranormal investigators have also caught manifestations in photographs. One of the spirits buried here and said to linger is Otis Jr. He was a lawyer who met a tragic end due to a lightning strike. His ghostly figure clad in clothes from another era frequently shows up after dark, but also makes occasional daytime appearances while aimlessly strolling around.
