In the mid-1800s the Free-State Hotel stood on this site. Pro-slavery forces burned it, so Col. Shalor Eldridge rebuilt it with an extra floor. Quantrill’s raiders destroyed it again, and Eldridge funded another comeback. By the early 1900s, the building needed replacement. A grand new hotel rose in 1925. Deterioration returned, and by 1970 it became apartments. In 1985, local investors and city funds restored its hotel status. Another major renovation in 2004 turned it into an upscale landmark. Today it stands as a symbol of Lawrence’s perseverance.
Col. Eldridge is said to appear, opening water bottles and lighting candles on his own. A shadowy figure lurks near the bar. A graceful woman briefly shows herself in the ballroom. Room 506 may hold a paranormal gateway behind an original cornerstone. This is located above the bed to the right. Guests report covers pulled off beds, flickering lights, and voices with no source. Staff have seen a ghostly poker game on the fifth floor. The elevator moves without a passenger. Many believe these visitors never truly left their favorite hotel.
