Sauer’s Castle was built by German-born businessman Anton Sauer for his second wife Mary and their combined children. He moved to Kansas City for health and business reasons after his first wife died. The brick mansion was finished around 1872, complete with advanced features. Anton died inside in 1879, leaving Mary with a stable fortune. Five generations of Sauers lived and passed away here. Later Paul Berry bought the home but faced vandalism until his death. The city tried to acquire it, but a descendant owner won in court. Present day the Sauer Castle is being restored back to life.
Visitors have seen flickering lights in the old tower. Laughter, crying, and shouting sometimes echo through empty rooms. Doors slam on their own. An apparition of a woman appears on the widow’s walk or stands in the tower. Some have spotted a man and woman dancing on Halloween. A boy’s ghost may belong to Anton’s son, who died in a tragic accident. Past owners heard rattling fireplace covers and unexplained singing. Caretakers often felt uneasy, sensing unseen residents sharing the mansion.
