Peoria State Hospital opened in 1902 after the Peoria Women’s League pushed for humane care of the mentally ill. Superintendent Dr. George Zeller changed its name from Illinois Asylum for the Incurable Insane to Illinois General Hospital, later Peoria State Hospital, because he rejected the idea of incurable patients. He removed bars, restraints, and sedatives, using an open-door model. Medical boards praised its cures, and the nursing school ranked first for 34 of 36 years. Budget cuts and state policy forced closure in 1973. Only 13 of the original 63 buildings survive. Today the hospital is open as a museum and offers paranormal investigations.
Legend centers on cemetery worker A. Bookbinder. After his death, about 400 staff and patients saw his ghost sobbing at his own funeral. The coffin was opened to confirm his body was inside. When crews later tried to cut down the elm he once leaned against, mournful cries drove them away until one day a storm toppled the tree. Visitors report shadows and energy across the grounds. A teen witness one night described a black figure near the tuberculosis ward that advanced and filled them with dread.
