Christ Church Cemetery History
Dating back to 1808, the parish of the historic sanctuary remains an active Episcopal Church, establishing it as the second oldest in Georgia. Notably, the surrounding cemetery is one of the oldest in the state, with the earliest marked grave dating back to 1803. It serves as the final resting place for numerous early political leaders, settlers of the Georgia coast, and even the renowned writer, Eugenia Price.
Paranormal Activity
The grave of a young woman is tied to a chilling paranormal tale. Known for her intense fear of the dark, she expressed her terror of being buried in darkness to her husband before her death. He vowed to leave a candle by her grave each night, a promise he kept until his own passing. Even after his death, island residents have reported a mysterious glow within the cemetery. To this day, some claim to see a flickering light beyond the cemetery’s borders after nightfall.
