This piece of land witnessed a fierce conflict between the Union and Confederate armies as they vied for control of Chattanooga. Over a span of nine weeks, two significant battles took place, each side emerging with a single triumph. The Battle of Chickamauga, occurring on September 19 – 20, resulted in a Confederate victory and was marked as one of the deadliest encounters of the Civil War, causing more than 34,000 casualties. 2nd bloodiest battle to Gettysburg.
Ol’ Green Eyes, or Chickamauga Green Eyes, is the most famous ghost of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Legend has it this eerie apparition, with piercing green eyes, was once a Confederate soldier whose head was blown off by a cannon during battle. Green Eyes was buried without his body, and now his restless spirit roams the battlefield, endlessly searching for it.
