The Magnolia Cemetery site began as part of a plantation. Its first official burial occurred in August 1818. Over time, the cemetery grew to cover more than 60 acres. Multiple sections were added, including five Jewish cemeteries, one Greek cemetery, a Masonic Lodge section, and several church sections. A Crape Myrtle tree stands at the end of Third Street. It is known as the oldest tree in Georgia. Later, the east wall was fortified during the Civil War to defend Augusta.
The most famous paranormal location at Magnolia Cemetery is the Wylly Mausoleum. Wylly Barron was a famous gambler and was very superstitious. A curse was placed on him during a gambling session in the 1860s. The curse said he would not have a grave. He built a mausoleum in Magnolia Cemetery and demanded his body was sealed inside. His tomb has no door and no keyhole. Visitors claim they hear noises inside the tomb. Its sealed design deepens the mystery. Some wonder if Wylly is trying to get out.
