Old St Johns County Jail History
The historic Old St Johns County Jail was constructed in 1891 by Henry Flagler. He had the intention of attracting visitors while concealing its intentions behind a façade of hospitality. It accommodated a maximum of 72 inmates in appalling circumstances, which included a high security section for violent offenders. The jail saw frequent executions with eight men being hanged within its walls. Prisoners endured grueling work, poor sanitation and harsh discipline during their time there. Since shutting down in 1953 the prison has been transformed into a museum.
Paranormal Activity
Many guests and ghost hunters have shared a variety of happenings at the location. One of the encountered events is hearing dogs bark at odd hours without any dogs around. Moreover spirits have been seen passing through the entrance door, only to vanish into thin air. People also mention hearing voices and laughter without any sources and feeling sudden chills in spots near the death row and maximum security confinement.
