Prior to Pensacola Lighthouse, a lightship named Aurora Borealis first guided sailors in Pensacola Bay. Soon after a nearby lighthouse lit its lamp in the early 1800s. The current structure of the Pensacola Lighthouse was built in the mid-1800s and first shone on New Year’s Day. It was hit by enemy cannons during the Civil War but sustained little damage. Later, lightning struck twice and wild ducks damaged its lantern. An earthquake briefly shook the tower. Many keepers served, most fired for neglect. Automation saved it and preservation efforts turned its quarters into a museum today.

Six to eight spirits haunt the Pensacola Lighthouse. One ghost is Ellen Mueller, raised and married there before dying in childbirth. A former keeper is among the spirits. Runaway slaves are also present. Child spirits who we possible victims of yellow fever linger in the building. The most famous room called the “bloody bedroom” which often presents paranormal activity. A little girl’s ghost plays in that room and is sometimes seen and heard.
