Originally known as Gilbertown Cemetery, Union Cemetery in Connecticut dates back to the 1700s. With over three centuries of history, this burial ground holds some of the oldest graves in the region. While the earliest standing headstone is dated 1761, experts believe there are even older, unmarked or long-lost graves that time has eroded or erased.
Union Cemetery is famously home to the “White Lady,” a ghost whose origins remain unknown. Some speculate she’s the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth, endlessly searching for her child. Others believe she may have been a murderess, or possibly a victim herself, discarded in a nearby sinkhole. One firefighter even reported an eerie encounter with a woman in a flowing white gown, accidentally colliding with her while responding to a call in Monroe.
