Originally named “Sanford Castle,” Hearthstone Castle was the brainchild of E. Starr Sanford, a renowned and wealthy photographer. The castle underwent a significant transformation in 1918 when it was christened “Hearthstone Castle.” An unusual demise befell E. Starr Sanford. During his voyage in 1914, en route to Texas to see his son, he endured a distressing shock that was inflicted upon him due to a lightning strike targeting the ship. Found in Danbury’s picturesque Tarrywile Park, the eerie and deserted Hearthstone Castle, once a symbol of grandeur, now lies neglected with boarded-up windows and overrun by tangled foliage. A stone’s throw away from the castle, lie a cluster of ancillary edifices, among them an antiquated water tower.
Reports indicate that a phantom dog has been sighted on the premises, alongside an apparitional gentleman sprinting across the estate. Furthermore, hikers have experienced disturbances, as something hurls twigs towards them. Testimonies also highlight the presence of eerie silhouettes and luminous spheres within the windows.
