Originally intended to be a fortress for naval defense, Alcatraz transformed into a living space for military wrongdoers in 1861, accommodating a varied group of inmates during its initial years. The United States Army later relinquished control of the prison to the civilian Department of Justice in 1933, leading to its utilization as a federal penitentiary for exceptionally hazardous criminals within the American correctional system from 1934 to 1963. Renowned individuals such as Al Capone, George (“Machine Gun”) Kelly, and Robert Stroud were among the notable occupants of this facility.
Keep an ear out for banjo melodies resonating within the confines of the showers. Al Capone, the notorious gangster from America, devoted his final years to strumming the banjo alongside the incarcerated musicians of Alcatraz. Rumor has it that the echoes of his banjo tunes can still be faintly heard wafting through the air on certain occasions.
