History
The Padre Hotel is an eight-story landmark in Bakersfield. It was built in 1928 and stands as a reminder of California’s Oil Rush era. It attracted colorful figures, none more so than Milton “Spartacus” Miller, who bought the hotel in 1954. Known for his eccentricity, Miller clashed with city officials for decades. His most outrageous act involved placing a fake missile on the roof, aimed at City Hall. The building saw tragedy too, with a 1950 fire on the seventh floor claiming lives, including children. In 2010 a renovation restored its former glory.
Paranormal Activity
The hotel is said to be haunted by numerous spirits. Miller’s grumpy ghost disrupts staff and moves tools. Dark shadows roam the halls, and some spirits frighten guests on the upper floors. Room 704 is infamous for a ghostly face with black eyes glaring down at a guest. A spectral cowboy reportedly dragged spurs and leaped from a window, vanishing without a trace.
