The Jerome Grand Hotel was originally known as the United Verde Hospital, and was built in 1926 as the town’s fourth and final hospital. Owned by the United Verde Copper Company, later Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation, it served miners and their families. The hospital shut down in 1950 as mining operations declined. By 1953, Jerome’s population had dropped from 15,000 to just 100. The building remained abandoned for 44 years. In 1996, Larry Altherr purchased it and reopened it as the Jerome Grand Hotel. Over the buildings time, people have documented over 9000 deaths.
Paranormal reports began almost immediately after the hotel was opened. The third floor is the most active. A child’s apparition is seen running, giggling, or crying. Some guests wake to find it at the foot of their bed. The sound of a baby crying comes from empty rooms, sometimes accompanied by the scent of baby powder. A bearded man’s presence is felt through coughing and heavy breathing. Guests hear voices, and a phantom gurney rolls down the halls. A ghostly cat is also known to haunt the hotel.
